Compassion...in a bowl

This commissioned bowl was just finished and handed off.
It is intended as a gift from one dear friend to another in gratitude.
The open hands are adorned with dichroic glass beads and white gold ink. A copper foil heart rests in the palms and displays the hebrew word rachamanah which means compassionate one in Hebrew.

The bowl is  16" with a matte iridized finish and a light dusting of hand-crushed clear dichroic glass. I am grateful for the opportunity to make this bowl...both the giver and the recipient are remarkable souls who share a beautiful friendship. To know them is also an honor.

Wall Mounted Fused Glass

Floating tile mounted on sintra board and polished aluminum
Tile= 6x6
Aluminum= 11x11

I'm having a bit of fun with fused glass wall art. Years ago I had the opportunity to visit a private glass collection. Among the many pieces of art, I found some wall mounted work. I wrote to one of the talented artists to ask about her process.

It took awhile to figure out how to do it without copying her. In the meantime, another local artist helped me locate a steelyard where I could pick up some scrap metals. I love using colored sintra board in my work as well.

I am happy with the frame...but nothing is as beautiful as the smiles in this family reunion picture!

A WOMAN'S HAND

Ready for delivery!

The Chamsah is a wonderful symbol for any young woman. It is a symbol commonly found on amulets in the middle east. "Chamsah" literally means "five". It is known as "the hand of Fatima", "the hand of Mary", and "the hand of Miriam"- three remarkable women representing three remarkable faiths.
I hope the young woman who recently celebrated her Bat Mitzvah will draw inspiration for strength, courage, and learning from each of these matriarchs.

As always, photographing glass is a real challenge. The glare and reflections are tough to control. The background glass is a beautiful transparent turquoise but In order to minimize glare, I had to shoot it on a black background.

Now on to my next project....a new design for a Torah pointer- Yad.  These will be made in the kiln rather that worked with a torch. Stay tuned!

HOME!

The new owners are happy and report their initial reactions to this new installation!

"Not only is it constantly changing with the light, it is visible from the Dining Room table, from the kitchen table where we eat breakfast, and even from the spot in the kitchen in front of the sink, the better to enliven dish-washing moments. After all, we need to be fully present for all aspects of life. All activities, including simply being, invite us to affirm "hineni;" all are gates that can be open; all are part of HaMakom. Your vision in glass helps us remember."

MOUNTING EFFORT

STEP 3 : I located some black sintra board and had it cut to size. It is a pvc foam board and a wonderful new discovery.

I used squares of clear glass and glued them to the board. After 24 hours of curing I added the glass panels and let them cure for 48 hours.

First Plate in a New Series!

This is one of my newest plates....as always, the challenge is in photographing iridizied glass.
The shine in this photo seems to diminish the colorful stripes...but the colors are pronounced and vibrant when you handle the plate. It's 12" x 12"....and it sparkles! The upper right square is silver leaf.

It is the first of my new Tapestry series, inspired by the famous coat of many colors (Joseph).  It's a wedding gift so it won't be for sale, but I will have it on display.

I will post future plates in the series...but they are on hold until I catch up on my new commissions. Yesterday's art show was  a successful endeavor and in addition to the glass I sold there, I now have 4 commissions to keep me in the studio for a couple of weeks!
